HIMSS Cybersecurity Hub Preview

In October, the OVA got an early tour at the new HIMSS Cybersecurity Command Center Hub, which is located in the Global Center for Health Innovation, and formally opened to the public on October 25th.

HIMSS—the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society—is the largest U.S. cause-based, not-for-profit healthcare association focused on the optimal use of information technology and management system or the betterment of healthcare.

The new command center is an immersive learning environment aimed at de-mystifying the evolving cyber threat landscape for executives, healthcare providers, IT professionals, policymakers and the general public. This first-of-its-kind, in-person exhibit provides visitors with the opportunity to interact with a series of standalone interactive modules, where they will be presented with various security-related scenarios and guided through different vendor solutions for addressing them.

The multi-sensory journey demonstrates how various points of care connect through electronic data, the security risks that can be encountered, and the latest solutions designed to mitigate risk.

The tour was led by Christel Anderson, the Senior Director of Interoperability Initiatives for HIMSS, which was established a half century ago as an offshoot of the American Hospital Association.

"At that time, our board had the vision to focus on healthcare technology," Anderson explained. "For many years, we focused solely on management engineering and process improvement. And over the years, we've expanded to many other areas—around clinical informatics, workforce issues, looking at mobile technologies and looking at things outside of the four walls of the hospital. And then we began looking at areas around interoperability and innovation."

She said the HIMSS Innovation Center focuses on is providing three specific aspects:

  • Networking - Bringing likeminded individuals together to collaborate. "It's a key thing for us, and we really see ourselves as one of the collaborators and key stakeholders in the supported region."
  • Education - "HIMSS has a very strong history and background in developing lots of education for our members and the industry, focusing on topics like cybersecurity, especially as it relates to privacy."
  • Technology - "We see technology, people and process as an important triangle."
